Spring Training 2005 brought more opportunity to explore the Southwest.
Once again Carl made the trek to Arizona with me. Aside form seeing a lot of
baseball around Phoenix we also got to Sedona, just south of Flagstaff, and Tucson.
Sedona is full of color and natural beauty.
It is also full of crystal worshipers and alien abductee hopefuls! We took in the nature,
lots of red rocks, but left the rest to those who obviously understand it better than we.
The two hour drive south from Phoenix to Tucson (it really is down there) is not much to
write home about. Flat desert. The high desert of Tucson, however, has much of value.
The Saguaro National Park spans from west of town to
east of town leaving only to the imagination what was there before this modern city arose in the desert. Unfortunately we didn’t get to the park.
We did get to the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC), otherwise known as the airplane graveyard. Thousands of mothballed and retired aircraft just sitting out in the dry Arizona desert. Some waiting for the day they, or their parts, are needed again. Not far from AMARK is the Pima Air and Space Museum. This is a sprawling collection of mostly military aircraft basking in the desert sun. While the arid conditions preserve the metals the canopies have become frosted with the constant barrage of wind whipped sand particles.
